Maria Joy
Systemic Family Therapist

Maria qualified in social work in 2002 and has more than ten years’ experience as a front line social worker in London and Devon. Recognising the complexity of this field Maria undertook her family therapy training and registered as a UKCP Systemic psychotherapist in November 2013. Since then Maria has worked in a youth offending team supporting adolescents to make wider life choices, develop their skills in emotional regulation and explore the impact of living with struggling or absent parents. She has also worked as the Family Therapist in an adolescent inpatient centre and more recently works as a Systemic Psychotherapist within a CAMHS team. Maria has extensive experience of working with families who may be struggling in many facets of their lives, helping them to explore and limit the impact of unhealthy patterns of relating which often are as the result of cyclical trauma and disrupted attachments. Throughout her career Maria has sought to help family members identify their needs and problems and then work collaboratively with them to find solutions. Maria is experienced in working with both individual and family groups for counselling and therapy for a wide range of needs, and can offer meetings through phone, video link or at a private consulting room in Exeter.
