Child Therapy Services
What is Child Therapy?
All children can experience a range of difficult emotions at some point in their lives as part of their development but sometimes they need some extra help to overcome these, especially if there has been a significant event in their lives such as an accident, loss or change of circumstance. Our Clinical Child Psychologists are experienced in working with children and their parents/carers in a sensitive and playful way to help the whole family feel at ease in discussing their difficulties. We use a variety of approaches such as talking, play, art and drama to help children express their worries. Therapy may involve individual work with the child, support to parents/carers, or whole family sessions.
We are experienced in working with children who have a range of difficulties. These include:
- Anxiety (including specific phobias and post-traumatic stress disorder)
- Depression
- Developmental difficulties
- Paediatric rehabilitation
- Attachment difficulties
- Trauma resulting from abusive experiences
- Bereavement and loss (including coping with a parental separation)
- Behavioural difficulties
Our Child Clinical Psychologists use a variety of approaches to address different issues. This includes behavioural methods, cognitive-behavioural therapy focusing on thoughts and feelings, play therapy, family therapy, and attachment-based therapies focusing on the relationship between the child and parent/carer. Often a combination of these is used and interventions are tailored specifically to your child’s needs. In the first instance, we would offer an assessment session to discuss your concerns and talk through the range of interventions available to you and your child.
