Prison Law
Psychology Associates has a large team of experienced psychologists, all of whom have worked in forensic settings (prisons and /or secure services) and can offer highly specialised assessments in Prison Law cases. We combine knowledge of prison policies and accredited intervention programmes with an ability to evaluate prisoners’ needs in the context of rehabilitation and resettlement goals. All our psychologists operate with an understanding of the Parole Board’s guidelines, and maintain appropriate awareness of prisoners’ potential risks to the public.
Appropriate psychological investigation requires the prisoner to engage well with the process; our clients comment that we help them to feel at ease through the difficult process of assessment. In addition, we ensure that we provide reports which can be easily understood by all parties. All psychologists have received training in how to present psychological evidence in Court and are confident in their ability to communicate their findings and opinions to the Parole Board.
Psychologists from our forensic team are all HPC registered and closely adhere to professional guidelines. We provide opportunities for their continuous professional development to facilitate psychologists in updating their knowledge of new policies and the emerging evidence base. We maintain a strong emphasis on training throughout the practice, and we offer training nationally on psychological issues to other professionals such as solicitors and barristers.
In addition to UK-wide coverage of Prison Law cases, Psychology Associates offers psychological assessment at other points in the offender’s involvement with the Court, including at prison diversion, pre-trial and pre-sentencing stages. We have provided contracted services to prison Psychology departments for risk and personality assessment, as well as consultation to Probation services. Our neuropsychologists also offer specialised assessments of prisoners with acquired brain injuries or difficulties associated with deteriorating brain function such as dementia. In addition, Psychology Associates provides consultation to teams working with young offenders and offers specialised individual assessments in this context.
