Specialist Assessment, Treatment, and Service Consultation
Psychology Associates have a well proven track record of providing psychological assessment and treatment to individuals from inpatient, community, and residential services. Referrals for this work come from a variety of sources including independent case managers, service providers, and allied professionals. Such work covers the life span and covers a variety of clinical areas including learning disabilities, forensic, and mental health. In addition Psychology Associates also provides service consultation, supervision and bespoke training to these services.
More specifically service provision in this sector necessitates the identification of an overall project manager who initially assesses the organisational requirements. This assessment develops into a problem formulation which drives the recruitment from the pool of Associates. This has meant in practice that extremely complex clinical needs can always be met by the psychologist with the most relevant clinical skills. Such specific targeting around clinical needs is impossible for individual psychologists or small teams to achieve.
Case studies
Case study 1: Inpatient Service
The practice provides the psychology input to a large inpatient unit for people with learning disability. A team of 3 psychologists provide a range of assessments and interventions around specific issues such as sexual offending, mental health, autistic spectrum disorders, and challenging behaviour. In addition to the core team Psychology Associates have been able to draw on a wider pool of additional specialisms including risk and neurological assessments. The ability to develop formulations around each of the individuals based on such a wide range of expertise is highly rated by the service provider, and has led to identification of previously unacknowledged problems such as autistic spectrum issues, personality disorder and specific neurological impairment.
Case Study 2: Community services
Psychology Associates provides psychological assessment and treatment to several children and adults who have complex emotional and neuro-behavioural needs. In addition to direct work this includes family and carer support, specialist training, ecological management, and supervision. An example of this type of work is that which has developed around Silvia, a 6 year old child who following an acquired brain injury has significant neurological impairment. The family and a team of paid staff care for Silvia at home. Psychology Associates have worked with the family and carers to provide specialist cognitive assessments, behavioural guidance, family support and staff training. A focus of this work was clear differences between the staff in how they worked with Silvia. In conjunction with the family and managers within the care agency a clear parental agreement was developed which significantly reduced the inconsistencies and therefore improved the behaviour and the relationship between family and staff.
